How Cryptic Movie Clues Work

Good clues feel obvious after the reveal. That is the target style in Cryptic Cinema: one sentence that captures theme and conflict without giving away the movie.

Clue design rules

  • No character names, locations, or famous quotes.
  • Focus on motive, tension, and consequence.
  • Hard mode uses more metaphor, not less accuracy.

Difficulty rubric

  • Easy: direct thematic hinting for mainstream titles.
  • Medium: fewer explicit anchors, more compressed conflict framing.
  • Hard: highest abstraction while still preserving plot truth.

Quality checks we use

  1. Remove names, exact places, and iconic one-liners.
  2. Keep one recognizable narrative fingerprint in the clue.
  3. Make the line feel clever after reveal, not random before reveal.
  4. Avoid overlap so different movies do not share identical clue shapes.

Spoiler-safe examples

To keep the game fresh, public answer examples are limited to one easy, one medium, and one hard clue in the clue library. The rest of the dataset appears only during live play.
